AUGUST 8, 2017

The Erie County Water Authority (ECWA) is extending the temporary water restrictions in the south towns at least an additional 48 hours, until Thursday, August 10th, due to prolonged repair work on a water main break at ECWA’s Sturgeon Point Treatment Plant.

“As we expected, removing high voltage electrical utilities buried over the leak area caused several unique challenges,” Chairman Robert Anderson said. “Due to the careful and expert work of our staff and contractors, this has been resolved safely and we’re moving forward with the repair.”

The protracted electrical work has caused an unanticipated delay. Throughout this repair, ECWA has maintained normal water pressure and so far no customers have had difficulties. Some may experience lower water pressure late today so the Authority asks customers in the Town and Village of Hamburg, Town and Village of Orchard Park, Town of Aurora, Village of East Aurora, Towns of Colden, Boston, Eden, Evans, Brant and Hanover and the Villages of Angola, Farnham, Silver Creek, and the Seneca Indian Reservation to only use water as necessary – no lawn watering, car washing and other activities that can wait until the repair is complete.

Some ways to reduce water usage are:

Repairing leaks of all faucets, valves, etc.
Landlords should check their rental units to verify status and make repairs on any leaks
Not washing vehicles
Not washing streets, sidewalks, driveways or building exteriors
Turn off fountains, artificial waterfalls, reflecting pools and ponds
Do not water any lawn, golf course, ornamental shrub, plant or tree
Do not use any fire hydrant, except for fire protection, which would normally be used in accordance with a permit issued by ECWA
Do not fill or maintain the water level in any swimming pool
Major non-residential users shall voluntarily institute water saving actions for their facilities.
