Public hearing set for an appointed assessor

On Wednesday night the Eden Town Board set a public hearing for Local Law 3-2021, establishing the office of a single appointed assessor pursuant to Real Property Tax Law, §328. The public hearing will be on October 27, 2021 at 7:20pm.  The legal notice will be posted in the Town’s legal paper, The Hamburg Sun. I would like to give some factual information as to why this decision is being considered.  First, two out of the three current Eden elected assessors support a decision in favor of moving to an appointed assessor.

The Town of Eden will be the last town to move from a board of elected assessors to an appointed assessor in Erie County.  In fact, less than 6% of NYS towns remain with an elected board of assessors.  That is less than 60/908 NYS towns (https://www.tax.ny.gov/research/property/assess/training/qualcert/threememberbd.htm). There are many reasons that towns move in this direction which I will highlight but the main reason is that it is good and efficient government. It allows for a consistent approach to assessing as well as a longer term of office (6 years vs. 4 years) which assists with qualification and continuing education.  An appointed Assessor has a mandated requirement of continuing education where this is optional for elected assessors.  There is an overall savings to the town which results in more efficient practices.

This decision has been contemplated for years and as mentioned earlier has the support of the majority of the current Eden Town Board of Assessors.  If residents have questions or concerns in regard to this or anything else pertaining to our town, the Eden Town Board is always available to discuss.

Definition of Highway: The entire width between the boundary lines of every way publicly maintained when any part thereof is open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicle travel.
It is the homeowner’s responsibility to keep snow on your own property or proper steps will have to be taken to prosecute violators.
We need to work together to keep our roads open during the snow season.

Thank you for your cooperation – The Eden Police & Highway Departments.

Notice from National Grid: Starting at 9am power will be out in the area of South Main, Sandrock, Paxon, Kulp, and Oakland for an undetermined amount of time.

Scam Alert

We have had numerous reports of residents receiving calls which have the Eden Police Department
phone number on the caller ID. The calls in question were scam calls attempting to obtain
personal information by stating there were arrest warrants issued for them. If anyone receives
a call from out number that sounds suspicious, they should hang up and call this department directly.

Hazard Mitigation Plan survey

To Erie County’s Stakeholder Community:

Hello!  As you know, Erie County is updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP).  The HMP will analyze the hazards faced by the county and its municipalities, residents, and businesses, and will identify a strategy for minimizing the vulnerability to these hazards.  You may remember being invited to the Planning Partnership Kickoff webinars that were held on November 18 and 19, 2020.  You can find out more about the HMP and the planning process here: https://www.eriecountynyhmp.com/.

I would like to invite you to provide more input into the planning process.  We have developed a short survey about the county and the risks it faces.  We would greatly appreciate it if you would complete the survey and otherwise participate in this important endeavor.  The survey can be found here   https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ErieCountyStakeholder

We would appreciate it if you would complete the survey by January 29, 2021.
